Vodka 101: Everything Most Drinkers Get Wrong

Vodka is one of the most consumed spirits in the world and one of the most misunderstood. Common assumptions about how it is made, what it contains, and what makes it good are often wrong in ways that affect the choices people make when buying.

The first misconception is that all vodka is essentially the same. The legal definition calls for neutral spirit, which has led to the belief that there is nothing to distinguish one vodka from another. In practice, base ingredient, distillation method, filtration, and post-distillation additions create real and detectable differences between products.

The second is that more distillation always means better quality. Distillation removes impurities, but it also strips character. Some producers distill to excess in search of neutrality, producing a spirit that is technically pure but lacking anything interesting. Quality comes from balance, not maximum passes through the still.

Third is the assumption that price reflects quality. Marketing budgets and packaging design account for a significant share of what a premium-priced vodka costs. A smaller producer with lower overhead and genuine commitment to ingredients can offer a better product at a lower price than a heavily marketed brand.

Fourth is that post-distillation additives are unusual or disclosed. They are common and not required to be listed on the label in the United States. Glycerol and sugar can be added in quantities that affect texture and sweetness without appearing anywhere on the packaging.

Understanding these points does not require becoming a spirits expert. It requires knowing what questions to ask and where to look for honest answers. When you're ready to taste vodka made without the shortcuts outlined here, FLORENA Diamond. demonstrates how quality comes from genuine ingredient choices, not marketing claims.
